Days I’ve Never Seen
7 Yet no one knows what will happen because who can tell him what will happen? 8 No one has authority over the wind to restrain it, and there is no authority over the day of death; no one is discharged during battle, and wickedness will not allow those who practice it to escape. Ecclesiastes 8:7-8
There are Sundays on my calendar months ahead. Beside some, I’ve already written the passage I plan to preach, along with upcoming family dates and necessary appointments. Between them all, I make plans for days I have never seen.
Most of the time, I don’t think twice. Then something shifts, and I realize how much certainty I quietly attached to a small square on a page.
The Teacher reminds us we can’t hold back the wind or control our final day. Preparing for tomorrow doesn’t make it ours. Planning matters, of course. People depend on me, and details need attention. But carrying responsibility doesn't mean gaining control over what comes next.
When Jesus taught us to ask for daily bread, He pointed to a different rhythm. I notice how quickly I still prefer a full week’s supply delivered at once.
I don't need to see into tomorrow to be faithful today.
Father, help me plan without mistaking my plans for promises. Teach me to receive today as a gift from You.
