After the Applause

15 I saw all the living, who move about under the sun, follow a second youth who succeeds him. 16 There is no limit to all the people who were before him, yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind. Ecclesiastes 4:15-16

An old king stops listening, and a young man rises in his place. The crowd gathers around someone new. It seems there's no end to the people willing to follow him, but the Teacher already knows how the story ends. Another generation will come along, and they will not be impressed either.

Dynasties fall out of memory, just as trending topics vanish overnight. A name owns the feed for a week, and then it is gone. Nobody plans the exact moment they stop being interesting to everyone else, but that moment always arrives.

Ecclesiastes is telling us the truth about how little public notice can actually hold. A crowd's attention was never built to bear the weight of a human life.

Maybe that's why being noticed never quite settles us. Attention has to be maintained. Applause has to keep coming. Tomorrow, everyone might be looking somewhere else.

God sees the prayer that never left the room. He was watching long before anyone clapped, and He will still be watching after the applause stops. You do not have to fight to hold the world's attention when you already have His.

Father, release me from needing the world's applause. Let Your presence be enough today, even where no one else is watching.
