He Didn’t Answer

13 Then Pilate said to him, “Don’t you hear how much they are testifying against you?” 14 But he didn’t answer him on even one charge, so that the governor was quite amazed. Matthew 27:13-14

Pilate had heard plenty of people try to get themselves off the hook. Jesus was different. His silence left the governor amazed.

Jesus wasn’t admitting guilt or dodging the truth. He wasn’t shrinking from fear either. He had already said more than enough about who He was. Now He refused to let anything pull Him off the path the Father had set toward the cross.

I’m guilty. I catch myself needing to explain more than I should. I replay conversations in my head. I rehearse the reply I wish I’d given. I want people to see me the right way. Even strangers.

There’s a freedom in trusting the Father’s judgment more than everyone else’s opinion. That doesn’t mean I stay quiet every time. Passivity isn’t a fruit of the Spirit. Sometimes faithfulness means clearing your throat and speaking up. Other times it means resting in the fact that the Father already sees what others miss.

I hope that sets you free today.

Lord, free me from the constant need to justify myself. Give me wisdom to know when to speak up and when to embrace a holy “zip-it” under Your care.
