The Compassion of the King

27 “Then the master of that servant had compassion, released him, and forgave him the loan.”
Matthew 18:27

The servant stands before the king, offering a promise he knows he can’t keep. He begs for more time, swears he’ll pay it all back. But the king sees the truth the servant won’t admit: the debt is crushing.

Then comes the part that hits hardest. The king is moved with compassion. He doesn’t negotiate a payment plan or shave off part of what’s owed. He simply releases the man and wipes the slate clean.

I catch myself doing the same thing with God. I show up full of determination to try harder, do better, and somehow balance the books on my own. But the gospel keeps pulling me back to reality. I don’t stand before Him because I’ve finally become worthy. I stand there because He is compassionate.

Before this story ever teaches me how to forgive others, it first asks me to simply stand in awe of the King. His mercy isn’t reluctant or calculated. It rises straight from His heart.

Lord, thank You that Your compassion is bigger than my debt. Keep me from trying to earn what You’ve already given freely in Christ. Let me live amazed by the mercy You’ve shown me.
