The Question Beneath the Question

16 Just then someone came up and asked him, “Teacher, what good must I do to have eternal life?” Matthew 19:16

The man walked right up to Jesus with a question that sounded sincere on the surface. But something deeper lay beneath it. He wanted to know what single act could guarantee eternal life.

Jesus did not come to give us a checklist. He came to give us Himself.

The man was searching for something he could earn. Jesus showed him the truth: eternal life cannot be earned by any amount of good works. It is the free gift of God, received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ as we repent and surrender our lives to Him.

Lord, help me stop striving to earn what You give freely by grace.
