When It Becomes Personal
12 The words from the mouth of a wise person are gracious, but the lips of a fool consume him. Ecclesiastes 10:12
Sometimes I start out just explaining a decision. But somewhere along the way, I realize I’m not just explaining anymore. I’m defending myself.
Someone asks a question. They see it differently. I know I have good reasons for what I chose. But now I find myself wondering, why don’t they trust me?
That’s when my words start to shift. I repeat myself, just a little more firmly. On the surface, I’m still talking about the decision. But underneath, I want them to understand something about me.
The Teacher says a wise person’s words are gracious. I need that reminder, especially when I’m convinced I’m right. Just because my reasons are good doesn’t mean every word I use to defend them is wise.
Can I listen to an objection without hearing it as a verdict on me?
Father, help me notice when disagreement starts to feel personal. Give me the patience to really hear what’s being said and help me respond with grace.
