While It Is Still Unfinished

7 Light is sweet, and it is pleasing for the eyes to see the sun. 8 Indeed, if someone lives many years, let him rejoice in them all, and let him remember the days of darkness, since they will be many. All that comes is futile.
Ecclesiastes 11:7-8

Have you ever caught yourself thinking real life starts later, when things finally settle down? I know I have. Sometimes I don’t realize I’ve been doing it until something I was worried about is over and I’m already preoccupied with something else.

The Teacher in Ecclesiastes says light is sweet and it’s a pleasure to see the sun. I can read past that because it sounds so simple. But some days I need a reminder that being alive is good in itself.

In the next verse, he tells us to enjoy the years we are given while remembering that they will not last forever. Death belongs in the picture. We have this opportunity to enjoy life, and we cannot assume we will always have it.

That makes me think about how readily I put enjoyment off. I want to know how things will turn out before I relax enough to appreciate what is here. Sometimes there’s a problem that needs my attention. Other times, I’ve done what I can, and I’m just waiting.

This day counts, even with something still unfinished.

Father, thank you for the life you have given me. Help me notice when I’m putting it on hold. I still have concerns I don’t know what to do with. Help me entrust them to you and receive the good that is here today.
