The Difference Between Saying and Doing

31 “Which of the two did his father’s will?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you.” Matthew 21:31

Jesus said it to people who knew the Scriptures cold, had the right answers ready, and looked like they had everything in order. The ones they dismissed were the ones walking into the kingdom first.

Why? Some who looked far off turned and followed Him. Others who looked close never intended to change.

That sits uncomfortably with me. It’s possible to appear faithful without ever surrendering. I can know the right things, say them, even do a lot of them, while still holding back the places I want to keep under my own control.

Jesus isn’t fooled by the version of me I show other people. He wants the real part, the one willing to turn around when I finally admit I’ve been going the wrong way.

Lord, don’t let me confuse looking faithful with following You. Give me the honesty to see where I still need to change and the courage to turn when You point it out.
