The Stone I Would Have Passed Over

42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has come the cornerstone. This is what the Lord has done and it is wonderful in our eyes?” Matthew 21:42

This verse just won’t leave me alone this morning, more than the passage I’ll preach in a couple of hours at the church where I pastor.

The builders looked at the stone and decided it didn’t belong. They set it aside. Never guessed that the very thing they threw out would end up holding everything together.

I do that more than I want to admit. Something doesn’t fit the picture in my head, so I dismiss it. It looks too small, too late, too ordinary, or just not what I expected. I start thinking God must not be working because I can’t recognize the shape of what He’s doing.

But He sees the whole thing when I only catch a corner of it. The piece I almost discard as useless or disappointing might be the one He is setting in place for something better than I had planned.

I don’t always need the full plan. I just need to trust the One who already has it.

Lord, help me loosen my grip on how I thought things should look. When Your work confuses me, give me the patience to wait and the eyes to notice Your hand, even before I understand what You’re building.
