The First Step of Following
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” Matthew 16:24
Too often I approach following Jesus as something I add to my already full life, another area where I simply try harder. But Jesus sets the order clearly from the beginning. Before any mention of the cross or the journey ahead, He calls for denial of self.
I have walked with Him long enough to understand the difference this makes. Even so, I still catch myself wanting to steer, holding onto my plans, my timing, my preferences. Real progress comes when I release that grip and fully surrender control.
The Gospels show that Jesus is not an optional upgrade to my agenda. He invites me to lay my entire life before Him. Each new day brings another opportunity to choose His way over mine, trusting that His leadership is better than anything I could arrange.
Lord, continue teaching me the daily practice of denying myself. Help me release my agenda, trust Your direction completely, and follow wherever You lead.
