Don’t Look at the Waves

30 But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:30-31

Peter didn’t sink because he stepped out of the boat. He had the faith to leave safety behind and walk toward Jesus on the water. The trouble started when he shifted his gaze to the wind and waves.

I do this more than I’d like to admit. The moment I fixate on the storm around me, fear swells and my faith shrinks. The waves don’t even have to get bigger. I just stop looking at Jesus.

What comforts me is that Jesus didn’t let go. Peter’s doubt didn’t shock him. His failure didn’t push him away. Jesus reached out right away and pulled him up.

Maybe I don’t need calmer waters today. Maybe I just need to keep my eyes on the One who walks on them.

Lord, help me keep my focus on you. When fear creeps in and the circumstances feel too big, remind me you are greater than every storm.
